What is the YMCA?
The YMCA units and helps young people to better themselves, to better their communities, and to better their world.
YMCA is the oldest and one of the largest youth organisations in the world. Founded in London in 1844, it has grown to reach over 65 million people a year across 120 countries. It has deep roots in communities, decades of experience enabling young people and communities to thrive, and an extensive global network. It has nearly 90,000 staff, some 920,000 volunteers and 12,000 branches worldwide.
YMCA’s vision is a world where every person lives in harmony with self, with society and with creation. Its mission is to empower young people and communities worldwide to build a just, sustainable, equitable and inclusive world, where every person can thrive in body, mind and spirit.


YMCA Armenia
From 1883 to 1923, YMCAs operated in Western Armenia, Cilicia, and the Armenian-populated areas of the Ottoman Empire.
The YMCA was one of the first foreign organization to provide assistance to the victims of the 1988 Spitak earthquake. Y Care international, charity of YMCA England & Wales, implemented a number of humanitarian programs in Armenia for several years after the earthquake: Including the construction of George Byron School No. 20 in Gyumri.
In 1991, a YMCA volunteer initiative began in Gyumri. And by 1994, YMCAs were already operating in Vardenis, Yerevan, Vanadzor and Spitak. In 1994 by these local organizations formed and officially was registered the Armenian National Union of YMCAs as founding members.
The partnership between Cevi Zurich and Spitak YMCA in Armenia, which began in 2001, has grown into a true brotherhood between Spitak YMCA and Cevi Zurich. Various joint projects have been implemented and continue to be implemented. Thanks to this partnership, the “House of the Future” YMCA center in Spitak was officially opened in 2010.
From 2013 to 2020, the Syrian Armenians YMCA operated in Yerevan.
Armenian National Union of YMCA's is an umbrella organisation that unites and serves local YMCA organizations and community youth initiativs throughout Armenia.
